Things to See in Franklin Indiana
Artcraft Theatre – Beautifully restored 1922 theatre shows classic movies with entertainment before each movie. 57 N. Main St., Franklin (one block north of the courthouse)
Franklin College – A private, four-year liberal arts institution founded in 1834. The streetlights on campus are the original lights from the town square. (East of downtown on SR 44/Jefferson.)
Johnson County Courthouse (built 1879-1881) – Beautiful architecture, especially on the inside. (Downtown on SR 44/Jefferson St.)
Johnson County Museum of History – Over 20,000 objects, photographs & documents
from past and present. 135 N. Main St., Franklin. (Two blocks north of the courthouse.) 317-346-4500.
Noteworthy Events in Franklin
Strawberries on the Square (May – downtown) – The annual Strawberries on the Square in Franklin Indiana takes place on the Johnson County Courthouse lawn every May. They serve fresh cut strawberries on pound cake with ice cream and whipped cream. It’s very delicious! There’s also a Street Fest from 7:00 9:00 pm featuring lots of cool cars from days gone by. The evening ends with a free concert on the courthouse lawn.
Fourth Fridays (May – August – downtown) – From May through September, Discover Downtown Franklin sponsors 4th Fridays, featuring live music, food and family entertainment.
Farmers’ Market (June – October) – The farmers market takes place in downtown Franklin from June 4 through October 1. Farmers market is in Franklin on Saturdays from 8:00 to 11:00. You’ll find the Farmers Market on the west side of the county courthouse. Everything sold at the Franklin farmers market is Indiana grown. You’ll find plants, produce and other items for sale.
Firecracker Festival (July 3) – Music, food and fireworks, in the park at the Masonic Home.
Johnson County Fair (July) – The Johnson County Indiana 4-H & Agricultural Fair is located in Franklin, Indiana and is held each year in the month of July. In addition to all the 4-H contests of every type craft, animal, bird, and aquatics they have a full midway and concessions, demolition derby, competition tractor pulls, antique tractor pulls, even pedal tractor pulls, as well as hundreds of commercial exhibits and many events. Fall Festival (1st weekend in October) – The annual Fall Festival takes place every October on the Johnson County Courthouse square. This is a family friendly event with something for everyone. Great food, lots of free goodies and entertainment! This all-day event is one of the biggest in Franklin. You don’t want to miss it!
Trick Your Trunk (October) – This annual event is a fun one for adults and kids. Families are invited to “trick” (decorate) the trunk of their car, truck or, van and then kids come to collect the treats (individually wrapped treats). Awards are given for the best-decorated trunks. Bring your kids (in costume) to trick or treat and see the cool trunks. You must RSVP with Franklin Parks and Recreation to reserve space for your vehicle.
Holiday Lighting Ceremony (1st weekend in December) – This annual event is one the biggest events in Franklin! There’s a parade, Santa at the Johnson County Museum, choral performances, carriage and trolley rides and the grand finale: the courthouse tree lighting followed by fireworks. Afterwards, you can go to the Artcraft Theatre and see A Christmas Story on the big screen. This is a magical evening!
